Italian Intermezzo: August 11th, 2008.

“A pearl is something precious that one doesn’t want to lose.”

(”Una perla è qualcosa di prezioso che non si vuol perdere.”)

I am more and more confused.
I went out with Marianna today - Marianna is my dearest childhood friend, a person that I have known since I was born. She has just come back from Australia, and she will leave for Germany soon (her mother is German) - we are both quite the globetrotters.
We went to the town centre today; between a quiet shopping session and an ice cream, we talked for long about living abroad and traveling. We both agreed on a fact: for some weird reason, we love our hometown, and the more we stay abroad the more we appreciate it. Even with all its flaws and problems, there is no place like Verona for us.

(That reminds me of some British writer that maintained “…there is no world outside Verona’s walls..”)

So I asked Marianna if she would live in another country, and she said no; even though there are very few possibilities for a good job in Italy, abroad she said she would miss “something”. It is precisely that ’something’ that I am investigating, since I feel the same. It is related to the way Italians “live” their towns and the land, the traditions we have, the different daily little rituals that make us what we are.
Those small things give me such a serenity, and a great calm. They make me want to live here.
Also, the people: as much as I love American people, their open and friendly attitude, their great hospitality and kindness, I will never be American. I was born and raised here, and here is where I belong to - and I cannot forget that.

I do feel the need to travel - often. But instead of living abroad for good, I feel more the need to “evade” and visit some place new once or twice a year.
Do I have opportunities here? Yes, I do.
Are these opportunities as good as those in the US? No, not even close.
Is it worth to accept a job that is not as good as what I could have in order to live where I can be happy, with the people I love? Probably.

It’s a tough decision, especially after experiencing what I would be missing if I come back.
But alas, I am a strong person and I would probably be abe to deal with that.
Only time will tell, for now I will just reserve the flight back in December.

Nice weekend in Cervia, at the beach, with Marta.
After a nice salsa night on Thursday (on the Lake of Iseo), we stayed home on Friday to rest and left on Saturday morning around 10 am. We found  bad traffic and then got lost several times, and it took us 4 hours instead of 2 to get to the coast; however, the trip was a lot of fun, and we passed small towns with funny names - like Porto Fuori, which will remain in our memories for a while. It gave us something to laugh about, and our jokes did the rest! :)

We arrived in Cervia, went to the beach, suntanned a bit, went to our hotel in Cesena, prepared and went out at night - dinner and salsa night at a place called “Bar Rumba”! I met great new people, some good dancers, lots of fun guys and girls - Marta’s friends. I danced a lot, had fun and enjoyed the cool weather.
Sunday, we spent the day at the beach, had a great pizza for dinner and then came home - no traffic this time! :)
I love going out with Marta because of her energy and happiness, it makes me smile constantly. Also, she is a spontaneous person, and I love that - her honesty too, since I hate hypocrisy.

But last week wasn’t only salsa.
Daniele, as a special person, deserves special words. Daniele, in a word, is class. And here I will switch to Italian because it’s still hard for me to use English in a beautiful and appropriate way.

On Wednesday, Daniele and I talked a lot - lovely evening at my place, looking at pictures from our recent trips. Then on Friday mom invited him for dinner, and we ended up having card tournaments (Canasta again!) and nice chatting. We stayed on my stairs (outside the main door) talking quietly until 6 am - precious memory to keep.

I am not sure I can renounce to people like Marianna, Marta, Daniele.

Tomorrow Maël is arriving at the train station, at 7.27 am. He will stay for 3 days. I am not too happy to have a guest in this period, when I need to do some soul searching and experience my country and the people I love as much as I can - but it will be nice nevertheless.
Then on Friday, leaving for Spain with Marta!

Barcelona and Valencia should make a great trip, and many more pictures to upload :)

Italian Intermezzo: August 3rd, 2008.

2:51 am.

I just got back from dancing - quiet evening, but lovely place :)
Marta and I met Alberto dj at Mantova, then he drove us to Maranello, at a place called Felix. Wonderful terrace with a breathtaking view, great buffet for dinner, great music - only negative aspect, very few people (probably most people are on holiday right now…).
We managed to dance a little bit anyway - Marta and I dance together too, if no one invites us! - and we spent a nice evening chilling in the fresh breeze (the place is on the top of a hill).

I watched Formula 1 today, and I am very sorry that one of the Ferraris broke down 2 laps before the end - Massa and his Ferrari were first… /sigh.
I am excited for the Olympic games though: it seems like Italy has a great team this year, and I will be in front of my tv cheering - I looove watching the Olympic games, especially athletics and gymnastics (and fencing, hell yeah!).
I do hope our female swimteam will do well, I really like our number 1 Federica Pellegrini - she is great (World Record in the 400 m crawl at Eindhoven’s European Games 2008), hot, cocky and way self confident, love that ^___^
My plans for Spain are set. Marta and I are leaving on Aug 15th and coming back on the 21st - the trip will be to Barcelona and Valencia. We reserved the flights and the hotels and we are super excited about it.
Hopefully that will help my poor Spanish.

The upcoming week looks intense: tomorrow I will go buying some dancing shoes, to the swimming pool with mom and then out with my good friend Daniele (good actor and good conversation partner) - prolly to the town centre. On Wed, Thu, Fri and Sat I will go dancing in 4 different places (Sat to the beach) with Marta and more friends… fun! :D

Here, Marta and I tonight - we were NOT drunk, I was driving so we drank just coke :D

Italian Intermezzo: July 25th, 2008

Hello everybody!

Since I am in Italy now, I will switch to English on my blog in order to keep my American friends updated! :D
So…. where to start?

I am SO happy to be home, it’s been wonderful so far!
I had the most pleasant flight ever - all the planes were on time and from Detroit to Paris I had 4 seats for myself (a bed, pretty much): I just slept the whole way through the ocean and I woke up in France, rested and happy. When I landed in Verona, I was so impatient to see my parents: they were waiting for me outside tha baggage claim, and we just ran into each other arms screaming and crying (mom did).
Other positive note: I met 3 nice old Scottish men on the plane, they were extremely funny except the accent!

Once we got home, mom prepared some prosciutto e melone and I instantly remembered why I cannot be a vegetarian in Italy…. Then Tommaso - my neighbor - came to visit and went out to get a gelato… wow is all I can say. Then, for dinner, we went to a pizzeria and got a pizza with prosciutto, grilled zucchini, stracchino cheese and mozzarella di bufala. Oh, Lord. That was a bite of Heaven.
Nothing on Earth can beat Italian food… really. I am not sure how I will deal with Hounddog’s pizza from now on…

Thursday night at Giovanni and Antonella’s house: I met their new kitty Nana and their ferret Medea - which tried to bite off my toe nails =.=
Chit chat, quietly pleasant: I have missed this, so much. Good friends, cigarettes and wine. Paradise.

Saturday, the jetlag kicks in: I slept until 1 pm, got up and ate some veggie made by mom.
Lazy afternoon, visit to grandpa and then to the swimming pool with mom at 5: we chatted, swam a bit and sun tanned - good times. Then I sent out a collective message to my salsa friends to greet them all at once, and got 5 invites and 10 text messages back in 20 minutes. That made me happy - I guess staying away 8 months help my friends to be quick to answer ha :D

After the pool, dinner at 8 (piadina… *drool*) and then out with my girls: Marta, Elisabetta and Elisabetta!
I forgot how much I have missed these girls, we had a fantastic time in Manerbio - yes yes we went dancing, and I did dance a lot!!

Here is a pic of us!
From left to right, Betta, me, Marta and Betty :D

Unfortunately my favorite dancers weren’t there, therefore I had to dance on 1. I did find some great people though, and had a lot of fun with my broken Italian - I kept saying “I am sorry”, “Excuse me” and “Thank you” and they would all laugh! :(

Around 2 am we decided to go home, stopped on the highway on a bar and had some breakfast - cappuccino and croissant just made…. God I love Italy :D

Tomorrow eye doctor , at Marta’s for manicure and toe nails (I will post pics after they’re all pretty and done), some more sleep and then either Ferrara or Piacenza - salsa dura night!! :D
That means coming back at 5, with breakfast before going home - can’t wait!
Hopefully I will meet some of my fav dancers too ^__^

Good night everyone!

Bustina Quotidiana: 28 maggio 2008
